Why you should consult a Dermatologist for your skin problems!

Why choose a Dermatologist?

  • Recently, there has been an increase in the awareness on Dermatologists and Skin Specialists in our city. In today’s day and age, there is a lot of information available on the internet in various forums and websites. There is also a resurgence of natural remedies for various skin conditions. But with such a vast ocean of information available, it is all the more important to know which piece of information is important and which piece is misinformation. Only a doctor well versed in the knowledge of skin, hair and nails (Dermatologist) can help you make that vital differentiation.
  • I have been associated with the field of Dermatology since early 2015 and so often, my own friends and family, people close to me, come with their skin problems. The problems itself are usually not that serious initially but after trying various DIY therapies and home remedies, they often come with a problem much bigger than it was initially. Things like vinegar, garlic and onion paste, haldi and organic soil like “Multani mitti” etc. applied in the wrong manner or in the wrong concentration can cause an allergic reaction or aggravate the initial skin condition.
  • Of course, it depends on the skin condition but there is no one cure for all disease like any expert skin specialist will tell you. So many people have tried applying toothpaste for their acne which sometimes resolves nut quite often causes an aggravation of the acne or worse, dark pigmentation which then has to be treated separately. Yes, I know everyone would love for acne to go away without having to consult a skin doctor but things are never that easy.
  • There are so many people who take medicines over the counter directly from the pharmacy and apply various types of creams for fungal infections or other rashes and the infection becomes more severe that it originally was. After that, it becomes an even bigger challenge to treat it even for experienced Dermatologists.
  • Some of the other challenges I’ve faced involves the hesitancy of people to apply “harmful chemicals”.
  • They tend to say that they would prefer to apply only “100% natural products” or Ayurvedic products. It is very difficult to explain to patients that even the so called 100% natural creams have some preservatives added so that it doesn’t spoil during storage in the pharmacies and shops for many days so the creams being 100% natural is a myth. And chemicals can certainly harm the skin which is why it is all the more important to consult a skin specialist who can prescribe the medicines in the correct dose and for the appropriate decision.
  • Even the best medicine applied for too long can be harmful for the skin. The best part about consulting a Dermatologist is that he or she won’t just write the medicines or give the treatment, they’ll also help you understand your condition so that you are able to take better care of your skin even after the condition or skin disease has been treated. To summarise, I would like to say that we should not delay a skin consultation with an expert skin doctor because the earlier you get checked and treated, the happier you will be with a healthy and beautiful skin. Remember, a Dermatologist has the training of more than 8 years in the field of medicine and skin. Your skin is a window to your health. A dermatologist can glance through this window and treat you holistically and diagnose any conditions early.
